number plate lamps

as we all know the factory number plate lamps are a) a water trap b) expensive c) rubbish
to avoid £25 for 2 new lamps and the cost possibly of a wiring harness I have done the following
take the lamp and cut off the connector socket flush with the body, from ebay purchase a 501 bulb holder, cut the wiring on the harness and put a lucar connector on each wire, drill a hole where you cut the socket off at the same dimension as the holder, push the bulb holder into place and push the connectors on.
Result !
cost
£3 approx per bulb holder, 25p per connector and satisfaction of a job well done that was better than the original !
Don't know if anyone has posted this before, if so I apologise for wasting anyone's time
