getting the most out of my car

Postby bassitio » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:36 pm

Hi,

I have a 1.4 16v megane and I'm trying to find ways of gaining and maximising the power it has. Can anyone suggest ways of gaining as much power as possible to save me wasting money on work and products that aren't going to help.

thanks.

Tbh from that engine there isn't really much power to be had, I'd it because of insurance that you have gone for that?
If not your easily best selling up and going for a better engine in the first place.

If that's not an option, a remap and decent air filter is probably the way to go :-)

That is exactly the reason and it was a good deal being as when I bought it 8 months ago it only had 9000 miles on. I think that is probably the way to go but I'm a bit hesitant about spending £200 approx on a remap to gain 4 horse power are there any companies you can suggest that can offer better results from a remap?

I've also fitted a K&N air filter which has helped a tiny bit, is it worth going for a full induction kit?

I belive the gains between upgraded panel filter and full induction system are fairly minimal, however the sound that the forced induction systems make gives the illusion of power and speed in my opinion, I ha one on my fiat punto, no way it improved performance, but to me it felt like a whole different car simply because of the noise!lol

As for the remap, I have no first hand experience as I like you haven't been able to justify the price.
I don't know if you can get it for your car but if you can then a plug in tuning box maybe a goo option, I had one which did definatly increase power, cost £80 and after I was done with it I sold it for £67!lol it was from an italian company on eBay, k can't recal the name..

A re-map, destruction of the cat, filter, stainless exhaust, 'tuning box', et al, will probably gain you virtually nothing in performance. If you want it to go faster, strip out all but the essential interior. Only reduced weight will improve the 0-60 time of a naturally aspirated petrol engine.

If it won't go fast enough, get a 1.9 diesel and remap that - it will be quicker - that or a 2L turbo petrol.

As mentioned, beware the insurance costs, depending on your age, location and other criteria!
Silver 08 plate 5dr 1.5dci Dynamique 106 Tech Run (re-mapped)

Red 03 plate 5dr 1.9 Dynamique dci120

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!
