Looking at Renault Megane 1.5 DCI Tech Run

Hi guys,

I am going to look at a Renault Megane 1.5 DCI Tech Run (2008) megane tomorrow. I was really excited and looking forward to seeing the car until somebody told me how many problems they had with there megane (2004 reg). I've been told the electrics play up alot?

What would your advice be all you megane owners?

Listen to the turbo - if it whistles, walk away. Check the colour of the oil, rev the car and observe the exhaust - lots of smoke, walk away.

Test EVERY SINGLE ELECTRONIC ITEM.

These cars tend to have random electrical gremlins, but most are easily sorted. The big killer is infrequent servicing - particularly with the oil. Ask the owner/garage what is in it, and check the service history. If it's had a lot of semi-synthetic oil or the services have been neglected, leave it where it is - unless it costs £50!

Do the electrics play up alot on meganes?

They can be a bit iffy, but usually only the early models (03,04). By 2008 most things have been sorted out.

Oh and also to my knowledge, it is quite normal for a turbo to whistle a little bit. It's when they 'whine' that you have a problem.

Mine whistles and it is pulling fine, no problems at all.

English is not my first language and I really do not understand completely difference between "whistles" and "whines".
Can you please help me understand?
