How To: Initialise windows after disconnecting the battery

I just discovered that the traditional advice regarding window initialisation is significantly different from the manual. According to the manual the following steps must be performed after re-connecting the battery:

1. Lift the window. It will move in small steps.
2. Once it is fully closed, lift and hold the corresponding switch on the driver's door for longer than 2 seconds.
3. Lower the window fully.
4. Once it is fully open, press and hold the corresponding switch on the driver's door for longer than 2 seconds.

Done! This is for the pulsed window regulators, whose switches have two positions. Check it by gently pressing the driver's switch. You will hear click-click -- two distinct clicks corresponding to two positions. The first is the pulse and the second is the continuous movement mode. So, each switch has two positions down and two positions up in addition to the neutral state.

Note: this can be done for a single window or one window at a time. This is according to the manual -- somebody check it!

Note: I would imagine that if this calibration is incorrect, then the window may go too far, thus triggering the child safety mechanism that causes it to go down immediately. Otherwise, if the window misses the "low" position, then it potentially can damage the mechanism of the regulator -- someone comment on this!

Had to do these steps on all 4 windows but it works perfect now

Didn't know anything about the 10 secs one

However I do know I had run the same step on each window

This is exactly my point. There is nothing in the manual about 10 seconds or pressing/lifting all switches simultaneously. Furthermore, both the upper and the lower positions must be calibrated. There is nothing about resetting the windows apart from disconnecting the battery.

So the 10 sec reset resets all the windows at once whereas this one resets them individually?

So begs the question where did the 10 secs version come from?

Iam pretty sure i have read that in the owners manual.

Re the window problems, when it says goes up in steps, does this mean window switched pressed then window keeps stopping or the only way to close is to hold the switch....sorry for stupid question rough night.

Yes, the switch is pressed/pulled up continuously -- the window moves down/up by a few cm (4-5cm) and then stops on its own. In order to move it further, one needs to release and then operate the switch again. Once the child safety feature is activated by calibrating the top and bottom positions of the window, it acquires its usual ability to move continuously. Then it moves continuously either (a) while the switch is held pressed/pulled up (first click position) or (b) if it is pressed/pulled up hard (second click position) and subsequently released. (a) is the pulse function and (b) is the one-touch function.

What happens when you use the other switch, does the window work correctly then?

If so, sounds like a faulty switch or switch supply to me.

If I use the switch to either close roof or the other switch agaian hold it.

The switches contain the contact groups allegedly made by Philips and known to fail in some telephone applications. Look at the truth tables in the manual. The actions of the controller are encoded as combinations of contacts. If one fails, the whole thing may start executing the wrong commands.

I guess you felt the draft coming from the switch assembly. Can it be related to the condition of the mechanical contacts? I wouldn't be surprised if many cases when the controller is replaced can be actually explained by a dirty contact...

BTW, can you hear the second click when pulling the switch up?

Hi All, I haveb just diagnosed a belt problem however I have also disconnected the battery in dong so and at first all of my windows didnt work, the front now work and the rear and panoramic sunroof doest??? fuses ok is this a common problem?? as I'm going grey fast......1.6vvt 2005 Oasis Megane

ino this is off topic but what belt problem did u diagnose? i think ive got something wron with one othe pulleys on mine.
