Air bag light
Hi all got into the car this morning and the air bag light along with service light came back on after starting! Any ideas? 1.5dci 2005 54 plate thanks in advance.

Re: Air bag light
i have the same issue
it will be either the connections under the fron seats or the switch in the steering wheel

Re: Air bag light
I got this once after having a service - Doh!
I just checked the connection under the seat and it went off. Easy fix!

Re: Air bag light
Most likely the clockspring mechanism if the area is the steering wheel - have a search.

Re: Air bag light
Yes the steering lock works fine, what's the clock spring and what purpose does it serve please? Sorry if seem a little ignorant
Re: Air bag light
The clockspring, or 'rotary connector' as renault call it, attaches airbag in the steering wheel to the fixed steering column and dash, it uses a ribbon of wires (like in a computer) that winds up and unwinds as you turn left and right.
But... with use, this wire can become damaged, and in these cars, for some reason it is not uncommon. Signs of this happening are a 'scratching' or 'ticking-clicking' sound behind the steering wheel, and then eventually, the Airbag light, and in turn the 'Service' light. As with most modern car parts, it is not as easy as just replacing the wire, you must replace the whole unit of rotary connector, which is a one piece unit including the indicator and light stalks, and the radio remote controls!
I'm in the process of replacing mine, I managed to find the part on Ebay for a good price.
Alternatively, most garages will be able to diagnose it for you and fit a new one, at the cost of about £150 for the part plus fitting, so a little over 200 notes. There shouldn't be any need to take it to a Renault garage, as that will whack the price of the repair up considerably!
I hope this helped, please ask if you want any more information!

Re: Air bag light
Many thanks, I do have this ticking os scratching as the wheel turns I will buy one and fit it myself bloody hassle tho having to do the stalks also! Any idea how easy cruise is to fit whilst it's all off? Thanks in advance, oh also the steeri g lock does not quite engage so I presume this is related to the problem

Re: Air bag light
Should you decide to fit it yourself (I'm saving up...) the important thing is not triggering the air-bag which, is my understanding, is the only risk.
EDIT: I mean while replacing the thing - not while driving it!)

Re: Air bag light
Yes i will do mine myself, ...wearing a crash helmet lol.. Eerm my mate who is a mot tester says jan 1st mot will cover engine management lights and air bag lights so expect a shortage of clocksprings ... I'm considering an mot late December to buy me more time even though mot not due until march. Also (in another post) I sorted my brake light failure problem, both rear bulbs have blown, now fixed but Halford's deprived me of 5 quid for 2. Is it me or are things getting noticeably more pricey quite quickly!! 10 quid nowadays goes absolutely nowhere.

Re: Air bag light
yeah fella sounds like the rotary switch has gone
that would be my guess due to whats wrong with mine and the computer read out
would try plugs under seats 1st, rule one thing out at a time
