Solar panel trickle charger?

Postby Inimbrium » Tue Jan 17, 2017 7:32 am

Hi

So I'm going away for a few months, and I don't want to come back to find my car has a dead battery.
Somebody gave me one of those solar panel trickle chargers for car/caravans/etc batteries.

Is it a wise idea to hook it up and leave it like that for 2-3 months? Can it overcharge the battery and ruin it, or worse, cause a fire?

Here's a link to an identical charger: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Solar-Panel-12V-Battery-Charger-Electric-Fence-Horse-/350109587175

Has anyone else done this?

Thanks

EDIT: The car doesn't have a car alarm, in case you were wondering. It's a 2006 (new shape) Renault Megane Convertible 1.6 manual.

The advert does not state clearly that the panel has overcharge protection, if you don't have an alarm, then the only drain on the battery should be the clock. I would suggest either removing the clock fuse or just disconnect the battery.
