Hi all, this is my first ever post!
My headlights on my Renault Megane 1.9 DCi 54 plate will not turn off. When I start the engine the lights come on automatically and turning the toggle to the off position does not turn them off. The Auto Lights are de-activated. The lights do go off when I turn off engine. Does anyone know how i can fix this? My car is booked in for its MOT next wednesday, will this cause it to fail?
Cheers for any help!
Steven

Hi,
if it's not the actual switch gone wrong, l would check the engine fuse box for damp. lt houses the relays for the headlights.
lf you don't know where that is, look on you tube for 'renault megane electronic problems'
Good luck
Bob

Thanks for the speedy reply Bob,
The auto headlight function also does not work on the car... would this indicate that it is an issue with the indicator stalk or would this point to possible damp in the engine fuse box. I have taken the cover off of the fuse box but I am not really sure where I should be looking or what for? I am very much a rookie. Any advice?
cheers

Hi Steven,
have a word with the mot tester, it may still pass.
Meanwhile, make sure you've got your radio code, disconnect the battery overnight and leave the top off the fusebox while we have the warm weather.
lf no change, being a complete novice, l suspect it will pay you to have it looked at by an auto electrician. lt may just be a relay gone wrong.
To work on the car yourself, you are going to need a diagnostics code reader.
Good luck

Hi Bob,
I'll disconnect the battery tonight and see if I get any luck!I I guess I have to remove the radio to get the code? I have a "Stoga U480 CAN-BUS OBD2 ENGINE SCANNER CODE READER" which I got from amazon for £15. I've plugged it in and have 2 fault codes relating to the EGR valve which has been recently replaced, nothing related to the lights.
Thanks again
Steven

Re: Headlights will not turn off... MOT due next week!
Hi Bob,
Just a quick update! I decided to play around with the indicator stalk before I disconnected the battery. It appears that the headlight toggle was jammed slightly. I managed to unjam it by pulling the toggle out and twisting it quite forcibly away from me... and hey presto, I now have fully functioning lights!
Many thanks for your help! Problem is solved!
Cheers

Hi Steven,
glad you found the problem.
Your scanner will only report on the engine, you can get them now to also do the body electrics quite reasonable on ebay.
lf you intend to do stuff yourself, maybe put it on your xmas or birthday list.
Bob.
