juttering at idle
hi all. ive just got a 2005 megane 1.4 16v. i took it for a quick test drive and everything seemed fine so i bought it. problem is after driving for a while [engine warm] you can feel the engine jutter when stopped at traffic lights ect. i have ordered a new set of plugs to see if that will help. after some research online it seems that the idle control valve could be the problem and just needs taken out and cleaned. thing is my engine does not seem to have one as it has a motorised throttle body. is it safe for me to clean the throttle body? as its computerised.[dont want to make things worse]

Hi,
on all these cars now, if you want to diy, you need a decent code reader.
Anything electrical will register a code to point you in the right direction.
Could be plugs, could be a sensor on the throttle body, could be anything.
Best advice is to get diagnostics instead of stabbing in the dark and probably wasting money.
Good luck
Bob.

well the new plugs didnt make any difference. guess i'll just have to live with it as its an old car and not worth putting money into. there's just to many sensors and computerised components on cars these days.

Unplug the coils one by one, if it gets worse its not that one. If it stays the same you found the culprit.

its not like its off a cylinder, it only happens at idle and only when car is warmed up.BrotherPlasterer wrote:Unplug the coils one by one, if it gets worse its not that one. If it stays the same you found the culprit.

So, what conclusion led you to change the plugs?

maybe a plug not working as it should. shot in the dark but it does no harm getting new plugs in. its not that bad just a wee movement in the seat while sitting at the lights. i can live with it.

I agree with grandadbobby, you need to read your codes.
I wouldn't touch the throttle body yet. You have to let the car relearn if you do anything with that.
I still say it may be coils because these cars are well known for them failing.
Cheers.

i have now noticed that its not so bad when the car is sitting on level ground, its when the car is facing up hill even a slight hill that it starts to jutter. strange.
