First of all - always get appointment in local workshop to check all car elements. Never tell seller where you gonna take the car. Simple tip but it helped a lot of people and their wallets.
It's like driving a car at night. You never see further than your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.

Usual stuff:
If you are not mechanically minded take a friend who is or have a garage inspect it.
Check every single electrical item as Megane electrics are fragile.
Check the covers in the wheel arches are still in place and properly fitted (used to access bulbs). If not don't bother.
Test drive on quite roads and motorway/A road. Boot it and check for smoke etc.
Check when cambelt was changed as this is expensive. If never done then walk away as should have been done with FSH.
Car should have a ODB2 connector below radio (if same as my diesel). Buy a cheap ODB2 reader check car's ECU for stored faults.
Hope it's very cheap - old, high mileage Megane wouldn't be my first choice. Had more trouble with this car that all of my previous cars put together!
