Cheapo Double Din Nav Install (with pics)

Postby Dan__UK_1984 » Sat Oct 22, 2011 6:15 pm

For a while I've been chasing fading FM reception and assuming its the head unit. I also upgraded the speakers in the hopes that would give me superior sound quality. Although better quality, they would still distort over level 20. I never did figure out why the FM reception was bad.

So I decided to buy a double din NAV/Radio/iPod/SD/USB/CD player. Designed specifically for the MK2 Megane so it fits the aperture almost perfectly (after the middle support bracket is trimmed out). Unfortunately I still have my FM problem, so not sure what's going on there. I've also lost my steering wheel controls - irritating as the seller on eBay said it would work...

Anyway, here she is:

The overall finish is good - the black plastic is not far off colour and texture of the Climate Control buttons etc. Also the orange LED's in the CD slot mimic the original equipment nicely. The user interface itself leaves a little to be desired, it is a Windows CE 6.0 Platform with a custom overlay. I believe with some research it will be possible to get to the windows OS beneath and start playing around. If the internet is to be believed, these units can easily run TomTom. As standard this runs iGo8 but can also run Route66 and GarminXT.

The sound quality using the Fli front speakers and standard rear speakers is truly impressive. Although lacking clarity at some higher volume levels, I think some of this is down the the quality of the MP3.

The list of inputs is impressive:
SD & DVD/CD on the front
3.5mm, USB, iPod on the rear
PLUS a whole host of inputs and outputs, for aux vid sources & reversing camera etc. Then all the outs to amps or extra speakers etc.

This unit also supports Bluetooth streaming, so I can play a media file or Internet Radio on my Galaxy S2 and it will play in very good quality (certainly 10x better than an FM Transmitter) all controlled from the HU (next track skip etc...)

I'll try and get a video of it in use soon.

Dan

Frustratingly I just swapped the aerial over with one off our Citroen and the FM reception is back!

I Had mine running tomtom for like 5 minutes and it was awful. I ended up putting Igo Primo on it which i found excellent. I found IGO 8 frustrating because you cant use the full postcode for navigation. IMO its not worth wasting your time with tomtom. If you can access WIndows CE on it then your world is your oyster, not much you cant do on it. That's a nice bit of kit you have there. Wish I shelled out a few extra bucks and got that instead of my piece of sh*t!

UPDATE:

I find I'm loving the sound quality & volume - but not loving the usability so much. I find that because a lot of my driving is along bumpy twisty turny country roads the screen can be a bit difficult to stab... Whilst the volume and source options are laid out nicely around the screen I find changing radio station a bit of a mare. I'm now tempted to just go for a decent quality MP3 compatible HU preferably with Bluetooth...

So watch this space - you may find it for sale very soon! Pita as I had to cut the centre support out - although I can buy a new dash trim piece for about £30.

Just seems strange as to why it wont work with your steering wheel controls considering its made for a megane is all....
