buying HID's

hi, i currently have a megane 1.5 dci and i want to install some HID lights but i dont know which ones to get and where i could install them so there not so visable (ballests) when the bonet is open.

just looking for some advice on which ones because i know they do loads of different Watts and stuff .

The wattage of HID ballasts is normally the same, the only difference between kits is the Kelvin size in bulbs which determines there colour output

4500K being bright white, through to 14000K which are very purple/blue in colour
ive used 6000k and 8000k kits in the past because there a good balance between white and blue

Kits can be bought near enough anywhere car related, my 1st kit came from a car show, but i now by them of ebay from japan because it was a lot cheaper and i could choose the kelvin i wanted

Word of warning, aftermarket HID kits are now an MOT failure in the uk, unless you have them factory fitted, or you have glass headlamps, height adjustment and a headlight washer kit fitted as standard

ahh, i didnt realise that they were an MOT failure, now i dont know where to get them or not.

it would be a lot of hassel to take them in and out before an MOT

Depends on how friendly your MOT tester is I suppose - otherwise, taking them out for every MOT might be a problem due to the difficulty in accessing the bulbs etc.

If you did decide to buy the kit, but the slim ballasts and mount then underneath the headlamp unit like I did

^^^^ did you have to take your bumper off to fit them like that

My bumper was already off as I changed the bumper and the lights, but yes you would ned to remove the bumper so that you can clean the areas properly where they will be fitted and, more importantly, so that you ca see what you're doing (test fit etc, before final fitting to make sure nothing gets in the way)

Hmm so were best just to uprate the bulbs rather than put in HIDs, H7s i believe

Coloured / tinted bulbs actually have reduced light output and (I feel) the animation in the lsiting is probably misleading if they are suggesting the light output will be significantly increased by those bulbs.

However, I have previously used Osram Silverstar bulbs whic are 30% brighter and much more whiter than the standard bulbs. Osram Nighbreakers are supposed to be better but I can't confirm this

so i once read in demon tweeks catalogue
id reccomend 'ring automotive' xenon bulbs, really bright light and plenty of distance in the beam, not too expensive either

i have used Osram Nighbreakers in my previous cars and found them to be very good , this time for my megane i have gone for philips x-treme vision 100% after reading very good reports on these £24 inc post of ebay, will be fitting today and report back later on what i think about them

I have tried the Phillips ones too but found them no different to the standard halogen - maybe I had a pair from a crap batch but I wouldn't buy them again

just bought some ring rally sport bulbs 100w, not bad for £8 of ebay, mind you the ring xenon max or xenon ultima were only £16

i could not report back how good they where as i could not get my big hands into the opening to fit , the car has gone in for some warranty work on the wipers that have packed up so have asked them to fit the bulbs

i had the wiper motor replaced under warranty and got the new Phillips e-treme vision 100% dipped beam head lights fitted, first impressions they are a lot brighter with a whiter light , the light is brighter and whiter than my full beam but does not reach as far , when i have some spare cash i will be replacing the full beam with the same make of lights, but i don't think i would pay recommend price for these bulbs so its a good job they are discounted on ebay
