Should be easy as pie, did them on my 5 GT turbo, not on my new megane though. Take the wheel off, unscrew the disk-bolts, take em off and replace with the new. Pads usually are attached to the calliper with little metal clamps. Nothing too tricky.

The only thing I'm not sure about is the ABS-thing. There's an ABS-ring that I'm not really sure about how it works. I'll try to get pictures out of the official workplace handbook and post them in a bit.

EDIT: cant find the pics yet, I do have this:

1. Hand Brake ON , loosen wheel bolts to hand tight, jack up front wheel , chock back wheels , put axle stands/blocks in place (just in case) .

2. Remove wheel. Disconnect pad wear wire , it pulls out of the connector.

3. Remove lower caliper bolt (at the back of caliper at the bottom) , need a 13mm ring spanner for head of bolt and 17mm to stop it spinning

4. Use a screw driver between the back of the outer pad and the caliper to prise the caliper back away from the back of outer pad. Pivot caliper upwards to rest on top of wheel disc (good idea to tie it up with some wire) .

5. Remove and discard old pads , clean out with wire brush and soft brush , don't breath in to much of the dust its nasty.

6. Fit new pads (remember pad wear sensor on inside pad), make sure that the pads are in contact with the disc , and the top of them sitting flush with the rim of the disc, don't force them into this position they should naturally sit there.

7. Lower caliper down into position, you may need to push back the piston further in order to make room for the new pads , do this with you hands or a small piece of timber. Keep an eye on the brake fluid resivoir , your pushing fluid back in so if its over full it may spill over. Refit lower caliper bolt (Renault say to replace this each time), and tigthen. Reconect pad wear sensor.

8. Pump brake pedal until normal brake pressure returns.

9. Remove axle stand/blocks , refit wheel and bolts , lower jack and tighten up wheel bolts.

Here is a picture How-To on the Scenic II, should be pretty similar:

Just to update that, there are no abs rings to worry about on front discs and no pad wear indicators or wires either.

It is a very simple job. Problems only arise when parts are seized on.

Edit: Also you say about pushing the piston back into the caliper. On the Megane, and probably most cars with ABS, if you try this the 'backflow' of fluid can flip a seal in the master cylinder and make it so your brakes don't function. The suggested remedy was to use a hose clamp on the flexible brake hose to prevent fluid 'backwash'.

in addition to the above you will need a torx bit to remove the discs on the megane and i think a 17mm socket to remove the two bolts holding the caliper bracket onto the hub, best to put some threadlock back onto the bolts before refitting, the new pads should come with new 12mm bolts for the caliper note these are smaller than the original 13mm bolts supplied by renault! all in it should take you less than an hour to do.

i'm about to do this myself, remarkable how cheap brake pad sets are! i've changed both discs and drums in previous cars, an inexpensive and relatively easy way to maintain your car. As long as you take your time that is :-)

I'm dreading having to do the front discs when they're needed - one side should be ok as it was removed when I was having her lowered, but the guy couldn't get the other disc off as the torx screws wouldn't budge. He tried a few things but then decided to leave the disc on whilst changing the spring. Naturally, this will need to be addressed but I'm not looking forward to paying for a job I would normally do myself just becuase these damn screws won't come out :cry

If the problem is getting the torx screws undone to free the disc from the hub, I've read that putting a ball ended hammer to the ends of them and hitting this hammer with a bigger one can release the rusting that causes the issue. Mind, this was related to pozi headed screws on a different manufacturer. Worth a punt if you want to save cash. Might be totally wrong though - not the first time ;-)

Thanks Dave - I'd definitely give it a try before giving up. Mind you, he did try that, and and impact chisel or something. I've heard about using a 'brass punch' as well.

My brother's car discs use a smallnut with a 'nipple' bit to hold the disc. When this was seized, I used a stilsons / footprint? wrench to undo that (I had given up, but someone recommended it on another forum). On these though, there's nothing for anything to grip on to....

I've used that technique tightening those Pozi size 3 bolts into walls before. 500+W can pack a punch - although, if you aren't pushing on it with at least your own body weight, it will strip given any chance!
