225 Tyre Choice - Suggestions please

Hi all

Im due 4 tyres on my 225 Trophy.

Not sure what to go for and was wondering if anyone had any advice. What works for you?

Currently running on the dangerous Dunlop Sports that they come with. Easiy one of the worst tyres ive had the misfortune to use.

I bought the car to be USED hence it gets chucked around. Normally go for Toyo Proxes or Eagle F1s on my previous cars but they about £140 each for the 235/40/18 size which im not sure i can justify.

(however if i drop to 225/40/18 i can get proxes for £85 each and since im changing all 4 tyres then the size difference not a major issue ) Anyone tried any of the different versions of the top proxes (T1R, 4Rf, T1S)?

Has anyone tried Goodyear F1 asymetrics? can get them in 235 size for sensible money but cant find any decent reviews.

where the heck do you get 18's so cheap from? got 18's on my mondeo ST about £560 for a set of tyres, pirelli P zero rosso. great in dry but can feel loose in wet, original had continentals better in wet but more expensive. would avoid yokohama if you drive hard, great grip but dont last long, got 3500 miles out of my fronts on my old focus ST170 one summer, got 12500 miles out the next set after calming down.

our megane is running on Kleber's 17s at the mo, cheapo version of michelin.

Theres a couple of local tyre places that arent bad but best prices ive seen are Ebay. Even the more expensive 235/40/18 eagle F1 arent bad for a bit of an awkward size (cheers renault ).

Yeah id heard yokos are a bit soft though id never tried them. lol@12500 vs 3500 miiles. Thats some fairly spirited driving! Like it. Sounds like the way i drive me mk5 RS2000 (bought for the track). Not quite as hard on the megane (Although saying that.......................)

Never heard of Klebers ill have to have a look into it, cheers for that. One of the 225s i test drove had conti's on and did stick well in the wet. Im sure theres a local place that imports part worns from germany - you cant repair a puncture in germany so they have to get rid. hence you can get a set of as new contis for nice money. hmm

michelins all the way sorry, if your an enthusiastic driver, id go for michelins all day and all night, theyre the best in wet and dry and have proven this, handling, grip, endurance, less nosiey on road, you simply cant beat them u get waht you pay for with tyres and michelin are quality despite the price, youll see the difference

Yoko's on wifes 225, great tyres, in the wet they stick very well indeed ...

1 thing to think about, I'm sure the trophy has the same wheels as a R26, these wheels are 8" x 18's
a 225 tyre could be a bit stretched on these and would certainly give not as good rim protection,
I have the normal 8 spoke rims which are 7.5 x 18 i have Toyo's on these, I think they are total garbage,
they have a very high treadwear (about 280) and temperature which is great for wear and lasting but rubbish on handling.
i put these on 6 month ago over the winter and on cold mornings it was like driving on marbles, they are better now the weather is warmer, but Continentals all the way for me (this is what i had on before), Yoko Parada are brilliant too but I'm sure you wont get these in a 235.The trouble is 235/40/18's dont come as standard on many cars just R26's, the odd Audi and BMW, it also isn't a popular conversion where as a 225/40/18 is.
Any Branch of MOTORSPORT WHEELS are very good on price, I used to work at the one in Leeds but there is about 6 or so around the country, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and London to name a few

i've got to disagree continentals are good for grip, but sadly rubbish for wear, expect to get no more than probably about 12-15000 out of these, they wear very quickly, had a corsa come in today for two tyres , size- 195/55-16h, and it was his second set of contis' the car had only done 25000! he got 12000 out of the ones i took off, if your going to buy branded you can get no better than michelin , this has been proved time and time again across the board.
