hotter air is less dense so the engine uses less fuel. you should see the opposite effect in cold weather

Cold air is better, as it provides more O2 to aid the combustion process. I have always noticed that my mpg goes up on cold wet days as the air is MORE dense therefore putting more O2 into your cylinders. That's why cars have intercoolers.

Back to the thread. Just bought a 08 86bph 1.5dci for the wife and was disappointed to only get 51.8 MPG on a 700 mile journey from Hereford to Edinburgh and back. Wife had the car set at 72 on the cruise so no excessive speed was applied. On the same journey I get 45 mpg from my 1.6e mk1 petrol doing 80 on the motorway so i am a bit disappointed with Renaults brochure mpg claims. Maybe this will increase as the engine beds in - anybody noticed this.

Cheers

Fraser

Thats very strange, we did a 730 mile trip to inverness as soon as we received it and the car gave us 61.1mpg driving at interesting speeds

since having air con serviced, vents cleaned out, etc... i have been getting between 39 and 40.1 mpg on my 04 1.6e 16v vvt dynamique. i have absolutely no idea whether the vents been cleaned out have anything to do with it?

I drive a 1.9Dci and on a return trip from Londonderry to Dublin (about 340 miles via Belfast) I averaged 52 mpg. Driving up north on our motorway (70mph) I was getting 62mpg but when I crossed the border and the speed limit went up to 80mph the average dropped to about 50mpg. I have seen it as high as 85mpg at around 50mph on flat A roads (not many of them about in Northern Ireland cause its pretty hilly). Normally with town driving I get 47-49mpg.

Just bought 1.9 dci don't seem to be able to get more than 37 urban driving, car drives fine and after looking at this topic everyone seems to be getting about 45-50 on average. Is there something wrong here? Car seems to be driving great.

you not putting supermarket rubbish in it are you? i have compared the fuels from supermarkets, esso & bp, and yet bp is the most expensive but gives me the better mpg. if you are doing short town journeys, starting the car up really hammers the consumption, or maybe it needs a good run out.

Thats strange, even if I really kick it I still get around 45mpg in town. I thought the 1.9 should be close to that.

Our 1.5dci 100 has had a boring life; lots of motorway stuff, and bits of town. Now mostly town.

In the early days, a 300 mile trip per week, with 30 percent town drive, stop start at lights; we were getting 58mpg. I took it to work in Birmingham and made an effort to take it easy; what else is there to do - 61mpg.

Nowadays I cant get that 61 again. Lucky to get 55mpg. All services are done. 40k car. :(

Generally, it now gets town use; and returns mid 40's.

Now I've got a petrol car my self, and what better to do than check your consumtion, i do a 600 mile per week journey and find my mpg varies greatly; low 40's if i dont break the national on the motorways. 35mgp at 75mph; and doesnt go below 30mpg on the motorway, no matter what. The bigger killer is leaving town in the morning; I've got to drive like grandad to get high 30's by the time i hit the motorway. A few too many swift accelerations down slip roads or off roundabotu and whoopf, this different driving style kills it and i cant get over 33. Driving styl makes all the difference.

I currently have a 53 plate 1.4 16v dynamique and using super unleaded it gets about 400 miles to a tank but the mpg is shocking at around 30-33. Is this right? Seems a bit low as my brothers clio 172 does 36+ no problems.

The 1.4 seems to return poor figures in real world driving, I think because the Megane is a heavy car and the 1.4 is low on torque and so has to be worked quite hard.

I think you could be right on that.

i have an 2003 1.4 16v dynamique megane just hit 47000on the clock and usually average about 31-33mpg would usually only get about 320miles max out of a full tank.

I get between 33 and 36 mpg on short town journeys where my overall average speed is 22 to 25 mph. Check your tyre pressures and check that your brakes aren't binding.
A long run usually returns around 40mpg.

I have had my Sporty for a nearly 3 weeks now, and despite a leak in the fuel injection, it seems to be averaging between 47-51 mpg. Thats on a mix of fast A road & town driving. The worst was in a very slow crawl around the M25 for 2 hours when it dropped to around 40ish, but so far well impressed with the consumption. Before I bought it I would have been happy with a 45 MPG average.

Not done a brim to brim measure yet, too many silly trips to show the car off, but hope to do one soon. Got a run to Gatwick comming up, and i might give the old right foot a rest to see if i can hit the magical 60 mark too.

I've been driving around in a 1.9DCi CC since Jan '08, and have been anal enough to keep a record of the fuel consumption (yes very sad), I've been 30% Urban and 70% motorway and averaging 44mpg.

I've been reasonably happy with that I know this lump in other Meganes can produce better mpg, but the CC is a real heavy car, so made the assumption it would affect the MPG accordingly.

However, my last two tanks of diesel have been Shell diesel (never used it before), and that MPG has shot up to 50mpg. Same driving style, same journeys.................it's quite a difference in MPG - not sure whether I should attribute it to Shell fuel or not, but it's the only thing that's changed.

I'll keep with the Shell diesel, and if I keep that 50mpg then I know the supermarket fuels that I normally use have been costing me money in the form of 6mpg.

I have noticed that when we had a pug 206. With sainsbury`s basic we hardly got 400 miles to the tank but with shell we got close to 500 miles. Been using Shell ever since

I get between 35 - 36.5 (now) in my 2006 1.4, driving fairly sportily ;).

Before i made an effort i was getting about 31mpg, i dont know what done it, but i stuck a new air filter, new spark plugs and used some redex injector cleaner for a couple of tanks (asda petrol) and ive been doin much better mileage. Full tank gives me 467 miles according to the trip computer. :D
