Hi all my meganes tyre size is 205/55/16,and one of the rear tyres needed replaced, about 6 weeks ago,i dont know how i missed this, but maybe i was too reliant on the garage, but last night i noticed the tyre they put on was a 215/55/16.Is this safe enough?Have not noticed any ill effects, but just thought it strange they put a slighter wider tyre on it......

The tyre you were given is 10mm wider than the rest and also 5.5mm 'thicker' (from wheel rim to outside edge). So it increases the rolling diameter by 11mm and the rolling circumference by approx 35mm (an increase of about 1.7%).
I can't imagine in normal use this would make a lot of difference, but you really need your tyres the most in emergency situations and I honestly don't know if brake balance/handling would be affected at the limit.
If it were me, and as it was the garage's fault, I'd go back and ask them to change it for the correct one FOC.
Have you checked the speed rating and load rating are the same as your other tyres? They may have fitted a tyre they'd had in stock for ages just to get rid of it.

:)

If we accept incompetent service that's what we'll keep getting.

I've never known of a MOT failure for that - but I may be wrong. Also, I've known people (from memory on TV) fitting slightly larger tyres on to rims.

However, I agree you should get it changed - not least as you don't have a matched pair, and that could cause all kinds of badness.

I find it hard to believe you can have two diferent diameter tyres on one axle. They probably just didn't checked what was written on the tyres.

It IS an MOT failure to have different sized tyres - just the tester obviously didn't check.

check reason for rejection...

1a. One tyre is of a different nominal size or aspect ratio to any other on the same axle.
b. Special lightweight or space saving wheels and tyres fitted as road wheels
Note: Tyres with aspect ratios of 80% and 82% are almost indentical in size and can be safely mixed in any configuration on a vehicle. Where this is done, Reason for Rejection 1 does not apply.
In all other cases of mixed aspect ratios on the same axle, rejection is justified.
