Rear wheel bearings / discs

I have a 2017 Renault Megane due for NCT at month end. On a pretest the mechanic noticed both back wheel discs and wheel bearings are rotten with rust.
The whole unit needs replacing.
Renault garage stated not covered under 5 year warranty as wear an tear but there's only 70,000km on the clock.
Is this common
A friend suggested there's obviously a problem and should be covered under anti corrosion warranty
Any help would be appreciated rather then forking out hundreds if the garage is trying to pull a fast one
