Quick one for you experts out there.
My 2006 Mk.2 (1.6 VVT) is hitting 3000 rpm at 70mph and the engine sounds like it wants a gear change, yet it's already in fifth. Does this sound normal behaviour to you similar-spec-owning people? I'm also getting about 360 miles out of a full tank of petrol. I'm not heavy footed, so am wondering whether the high revs are an indicator of something wrong and it's drinking fuel quicker than it should do?

That sounds about right as I've got 2008 1.6vvt petrol but I get around 400 miles on full tank on a good run

Yep, mine exactly the same and actually that's interesting as I thought it was just because I had the Auto Box! You are 100% right it feels like it needs another gear up top, in fact I often drive at 60 so it sounds more relaxed albeit it's a bit boring! Lol

Think of it this way, if the car could rev out in top gear that would give you a theoretical top speed of about 150mph. So at 3000rpm it is only revving at less that half it's potential, normally aspirated petrol engines prefer to rev quite high and under a light load and this is where they are most efficient. Don't forget some of the high powered motorbikes are revving to 17,000 rpm and the rev counter doesn't even start till above 3000.
But I know what you mean as I drive a 2 litre car as well as my 1.6 and it has more low down power and does not need to rev as much, so I feel I'm thrashing my 1.6 everywhere I go.
