Some info on brakes please.

Postby Kazzakins » Thu Apr 23, 2015 6:14 pm

Hi again,
Think its time to change my brakes.
Being a girl who likes to get her hands dirty i'm going to do it myself. discs and pads obviously

I keep seeing sets on ebay listing the bearing and abs rings? Do I need to have special tools or will it prevent me from doing it?
Where is the best place to get them from?
Best make to get, bearing in mind its a standard car, 1.6..
Any other info is greatly appreciated

:hug

I had my rear brakes done recently, at the last MOT under advisory it was noted the disc's were corroded. Anyway the brakes were pretty poor last trip out, so took to my local garage who replaced rear disc's and pads, but I noticed this had included wheel bearings, I did ask and it seems they are part of the disc, so it's not really cost effective to replace them separately as they are available as a kit. It was about £90 for parts and £50 for labour (plus VAT). I'm sure there is a YouTube video about doing it??

HI, just done the discs and pads all round on my 1.9dci. Got them from ebay for £115 delivered. I was worried about the abs ring too, but they have gone on a treat. I had to tell him which calipers I had front and rear as apparently they are different, even on the same models. I can try and get his ebay member name if you wish.

The only special tool you will for rear calipers is a brake tool to wind the rear pistons in I borrowed a vw one fronts are ok but rears because of hand brake will need to be wound back to get new pads in.

Thank you for the replies people :hug

I have seen complete kits on ebay and wondered on quality. But sounds like they will be fine on my little car.

Can you remember which way the pistons wind?

No sorry it was around years ago. I think they all fit to the caliper the same way one part pushes againt the outer side of the caliper whilst you turn the handle to wind in piston if you wind the wrong way you will see the piston coming out but also tool will stop turning. But to be honest it is to long back to remember, sorry. I dont think enough owners on here work on their car themselves which is a shame instead they book em in. Its not a difficult car to work on in general just a bit of a lump to jack up she weights a fair bit so make sure you axel stand her. But by working on her yourself you will learn a lot about her.

Sorry if this reply is a bit late. I bought a complete set of cross drilled and grooved discs and pads including rear bearings and abs rings off eBay for £220. It took just under 4 hours to carry out the complete change over with the help of my brother. I shall post a couple of pics if I can to show you what they look like. I've also painted the calipers and put some new allows on but that's another story :)
Get that roof down, and 63 mpg, happy days indeed :)
