Forward boot catch won't release

I have a 2005 MK2 cc. Everything was working fine before being parked up over the winter.
When I tried to open the roof last week one of the forward catches that lock when the boot is closed refused to unlock thus preventing the boot to tilt back to let the roof be stowed. The roof itself opens about an inch or so before this happens and I get 'roof mechanism fault' on the display.
Anyone got any ideas why or where to look to resolve?
