Compatible engine oil specifications

Postby AlexB » Wed May 28, 2014 12:19 pm

The idea is to identify similar or to Renault specs, so one could make better buying choices. Many specs, such as API, ACEA, BMW, etc, are not included because they are not strong enough. They, however, may be combined with those listed below. I compiled these lists by using the tool available here:
https://origin-qps.onstreammedia.com/ori ... index.html

Some of these may not be suitable for long drain intervals, which are not a good idea anyway.

Petrol non-turbo Renaults:
(starting with slightly better characteristics, although all are decent)
A40 (Porsche)
VW506.01 (Volkswagen) -- specific to VW injectors, which we don't have
VW506.00 (Volkswagen)
RN0700 (Renault)
M2C913C (Ford)
M2C913D (Ford)
The others seem to be either thicker or weaker.
All turbo oils listed below will also work, although with a slightly higher fuel consumption due to greater HTHS

Diesel without DPF and turbo-petrol Renaults, inc. RS225, RS250 and RS265
(starting with slightly better characteristics, although all are decent)
These have to be SAE Xw40 in addition to the specs below...
MB229.5 (Mercedes)
VW507.00 (Volkswagen)
RN0710 (Renault)
MB229.3 (Mercedes)
ACEA A3/B4 European
MB229.51 (Mercedes)
MB229.31 (Mercedes)

Diesel with DPF
C30 (Porsche) -- too good to be true, needs to be verified...
VW507.00 (Volkswagen)
RN0720 (Renault)
ACEA C4 is a much weaker spec. apart from cleanliness, so it will not damage the filter.

Beake fluid

Postby AlexB » Mon Sep 08, 2014 9:26 am

In case someone did not see the factory manuals for Megane III, which might be also applicable to Megane II...

They recommend DOT4 ISO 4925 Class 6 for ESP systems, DOT4 ISO 4925 Class 4 for ABS and emergency brake assistance systems and DOT4 non-classed for the systems which we don't have in the UK. Widely available DOT5.1 is approximately equivalent to ISO 4925 Class 6.

As a guideline, DOT4 ISO 4925 Class 6 and DOT5.1 are about half as thick as DOT4 ISO 4925 Class 4 at low temperatures. A basic non-classed DOT4 can be tree times thicker than the good stuff. Wet and dry boiling points of DOT4 Class 6 and DOT5.1 are typically significantly higher than of DOT4 Class 4 or non-classed (apart from the racing fluids like Motul RBF600 or RBF660).

Any of these fluids need to be changed every second year.

Conclusion: buy DOT4 Class 6 or DOT5.1 for your car.

(sorry, it's a copy of my other rapidly sinking post)
