I am thinking of buying a 1.9 DCI or the 1.6 VVT Petrol.
would anyone recommend the 1.9DCI over the 1.6 petrol.
Fuel prices here are going up every month and Diesel is quite high now, looking at the stats the 1.6 petrol is only 10 miles to the gallon less then the 1.9.
How different are they in performance, i have tested the 1.5 DCI and thought it was sluggish, but havn't tested the 1.6 or the 1.9DCI yet..
Has anyone drove both, still in two minds which one to go for , any suggestions please.

I've just sold my 1.6 worse car I have ever owned, but a mate of mine has the 1.9DCI and he loves it. I'd go and test the 1.9.

Why not consider the 2.0 16V? I love it, especially with the automatic gearbox

ive got the 1.9 and love it to bits plenty of power and great on fuel and when the prices soar the diesel levels off the same price as petrol but its personal choice really

Re: 1.6 VVT or 1.9 DCI
everything else, but not the 1.6 petrol.....such a no-goer....if you want only the slightest performance you have to push it no end....absolute crap....well, in my view at least. had that engine twice, in a Kangoo and in a Clio and it was that bad, so I guess in a heavy Megane it can only be even worse...

Re: 1.6 VVT or 1.9 DCI
I too have driven a 1.6 Megane, compared to my 1.9dCi, it does feel slow and gutless, but then again I'm comparing a petrol and a diesel engine. Both engines have different characteristics obviously!
In the petrol, some could say it could be more fun to drive because it revs higher. This doesn't mean its fast compared to the 1.9 dCI though - compare the 1.6 Megane to its 1.6 petrol rivals like focus/golf etc
In the diesel, some could say its less fun to drive because it only revs to 4,000rpm.
I do not believe the Megane is a heavy car, my 1.9 dCi weighs in at 1270kg - the petrols weigh somewhat less. Again, compare the weight of the megane to other rivals - all similar - yet all have engines as small as 1.4 in there line up.
If you're doing a lot of miles a year or want excellent over taking power, go for the diesel.
If you're doing 15,000miles or less a year, I would consider the petrol in my opinion.
The best way is to try both models!

Re: 1.6 VVT or 1.9 DCI
wow the 1.9 all the way!!
which bhp is it? think there are the 120 and 150, is that right?
if i had to make the choice i would get the 150bhp 1.9 and get it mapped - nice little beast then

Re: 1.6 VVT or 1.9 DCI
i got a 1.9 120bhp dci and i wouldn't go near a 1.6 petrol the dci is great for midrange power and 40+mpg being driven fairly hard most days (i always get up late) the 1.6 is only around 100bhp aswel i think?!? i'd put my dci against any 1.6 my bro's got a 2l corsa and it sticks with that to 100 and thats 200bhp!! its all the torque dragging it round
its gone but not forgotten lol, but the A3 has more than filled the gap on the drive woo hoo i love it
